OUR FOUNDER: Sumatra Films is spearheaded by acclaimed director Ariel Vromen. Born in Tel Aviv, Ariel has been the creative force behind numerous projects including Feature Films, Shorts, Music Videos, and Documentaries, and has directed and produced projects for major production entities such as Lionsgate/Summit, Millennium Films, First Looks Films, Screen Media Universal, Film Colony and Next Wave Films. He is perhaps best known for writing and directing the award-winning feature film "The Iceman" starring Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon, Academy Award nominee Winona Ryder, Academy Award nominee James Franco, as well as Ray Liotta and Chris Evans. He also wrote and directed several other films, including the underground hit "Jewel of the Sahara" starring Gerard Butler, the award-winning feature film "Rx" starring Colin Hanks, Eric Balfour and Lauren German, and the Blue Omega psychological thriller "Danika" starring Academy Award winner Marissa Tomei, Craig Bierco and Regina Hall. Ariel's next movie "Criminal" is set for release in January 2016, and features an all-star cast including Academy Award winner Kevin Costner, Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman, Academy Award nominee Tommy Lee Jones, as well as Gal Gadot, Alice Eve, Michael Pitt and Ryan Reynolds. Before finding his true passion in filmmaking, Ariel paid his dues serving in the IDF before moving to the United Kingdom to study law at University of Kent. Upon graduating with his law degree, he realized becoming a lawyer was not his true calling and focused on his passion of producing music. A thriving DJ, Ariel opened a recording studio and produced three albums in London. Afterwards, he moved to New York City where he decided to pursue film studies at NYU and the Los Angeles Film School. Ariel currently resides in Los Angeles, where he founded his successful production company Sumatra Films, and is working on multiple film & documentary projects in development.
